It's hard to believe 1 month of school has passed! I recommended reading 2 books each month to manage the reading expectation of 25 books this year. How's that going?
Many of you are looking for a new book to read. Bilal recommended The Westing Game, and Christa has since reserved a copy at the library. Ria is racing through The Hunger Games after hearing the rest of us go on and on and on about it! Zyare has suggested Regan join the GSS Quiz Bowl team. Isn't that fantastic?
So, what book(s) would you recommend? Please include a brief summary of the plot, the genre, and if possible, the Lexile score.
I recomened Hunger Games to EVERYBODY!
ReplyDelete-Mary-Grace Buckley
I absolutely love these books, too! There's so much to discuss like government control, loyalty, and personal choice. Some parents and students think the book series is too violent for middle school students. What do you think?
DeleteI agree those are great books mary-grace
DeleteDalibeth
I recommend the Secret__ series____ oh sorry it wont let me capitolize the s in series. anyways if u want to check it out go to the media center and in the first row i have my own shelves and on those shelves there should be the series. the authors last name is Bosch( CANT SPELL OR PRONUONCE FIRST NAME). Hope u like it!
ReplyDeleteFrom: Zy
Thanks, Zyare! Based on the book's title, I'm thinking it falls within the mystery genre. Is that right?
DeleteI recommended The Boy Project for girl because it is about a girl who try's to find a boyfriend then a science fair project comes up and she dose it on boys and the lexile score id 810
ReplyDelete- shayla h.
Hi, Shayla! Is the book really dramatic or more of a comedy?
Deleteit is like dramatic
Delete- Shayla Harrison
hi this is kyla and reilly
ReplyDeletewe are working on hw together our reading log :) so we will see ya tomorrow!
Sounds like fun! :)
Deletehello ms Thomas i'm reading the book Queen of Cool it is a very good book it is about a girl named Libby who is sick of having the same friends the same boyfriend and the same routine so she mistakenly sighed up for a zoo intern ship and hangs out with the "nerds" but she finds they arnt so bad and she actually is starting to like them. so if you are mature you should read this book because it has its bad language and bad moments
ReplyDeleteyour student savannah z
ps have you read this book
Hi, Savannah! I haven't read this book. Thank you for the maturity warning and your discretion about the details.
DeleteAs I'm sure Libby learned, our friends can be people who are different from us and don't quite fit our stereotypes of them.
yes ma'am you should read it its awesome and i normally dont like to read but loved this
Deletesavannah zaiser
pretty good I have read 8 books last month!
ReplyDeleteFrom: Zy
Fantastic! Work on those book pages so that I can chart your progress on our charts.
DeleteHi Mrs.Thomas thids is allison and i recommend
ReplyDeletethe book that me and my dad are reading its interesting and its called dragon heros it about a kid and he has a pet dragon.
ps this is allison
from third block
Hi, Allison! How cool to be reading with your dad! My mom used to get excited about the books I loved. She would take me to the library to find them, or she would give me books as birthday and Christmas presents.
DeleteI'm guessing the genre is fantasy. Is that right? Is there any comedy involved?
Sorry im trying but writing is one of the things i do less so i have to apply myself to do it
DeleteFrom: Zyare
Hi, Zyare. I'm confused by your comment. Was it a comment to something else I said?
DeleteHey! Mrs.Thomas its me Archie. I have just finished the Harry_Potter series. Well I have
ReplyDeletealso finished many other books. This book called
Harry_Potter_and_the_prisoner_of_azakaben.I would recomend this book to leilah. So Please!
Try to read it even if u dont like it so! :)Dont feel sad about my comment Leliah.
Hi, Archie! Why would Leilah be "sad" about your comment? Am I missing an inside joke? :)
DeleteWhat benefits are there to be reading the books when many students would opt to see the movie? Explain the value of reading the books anyway (I personally think books are almost always better than the movies about them).
I have become a blogger yahh!
DeleteFirst of I would say no you did not miss an insid joke. I thought that maybe she would feel bad if I Said something wrong. SO I would say that I ought to read the book instead of watching the movie because you can imagine what is happening. Or maybe you can also find out the mystery or whatever that happens instead of watching everything. Reading makes your mind refresh and makes you feel good.
SO I would say try to READ READ and READ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi, Archie! I couldn't agree with you more. When I read books, I become a bit of a movie director. I develop ideas for the casting, the setting, etc. I do like to watch movies and experience someone else's imagination. However, I value my own imagination as well, and I use it as I read.
DeleteSame Here!!!!! Well I have been trying to say this all along. I used to hate ELA
Deletesince ever since I started school. But when I came to your class, I was like Im
going like this year! I also want to appreciate for what you have done for this class!!!!!!!!!!
P.S.-- I am looking for a new book. any suggestions?
I love books full of adventures, also I love some mystery books too. By the way I love SCARY BOOKS TOO!!!!!
What a wonderful way to end my evening! Thank you for the kind words. Not every day is perfect, but I do try my best at creating a friendly, engaging classroom.
DeleteHow about the Percy Jackson series? It's a bit of mystery and adventure with Greek mythology.
I'm not the person to ask about horror books. I don't read them or watch scary movies. I would be up all night looking under my bed and behind the shower curtain.
Hi Archie! I think you would be interested in the Artemis Fowl series. I have not read them but think you should look into reading this series. The lexile level is farely low (600) but I just think you might like it.
DeleteChrista Ross
thanks Christa! What a nice way. I Was just going to the library. Maybe I can look to see and find this book. See I really dont like the lexile thing. but its helpful for school. I just like to read and enjoy myself.!!
DeleteHey Ms. Thomas! This is Ms. Nancy Nguyen here. I thought I should leave a comment on the blog. I'm interested in the books that everyone is reading. I've seen a popular demand for The Hunger Games and the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series.
ReplyDeleteHas anyone heard of or read the Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer? It is one of my favorite fantasy reads from middle school. Unfortunately, I haven't finished reading The Lost Colony, and I know there are 3 other books after it! =(
The main character is Artemis Fowl, a 12-year old boy genius and a criminal mastermind. He discovers the existence of magic and fairies and travels the world to find them. On his quest for gold, there are dangerous encounters with leprechauns, dwarves, and sprites. Eventually, he kidnaps one named Holly Short and holds her for ransom in exchange for fairy gold.
There is the conflict of man vs. man and good vs. evil in this book. Do you remember the other types of conflict from class? Which type of conflict is in the book you are reading?
Welcome to our blog, Ms. Nguyen! The students were asking about you today. I told them you would return on Monday.
DeleteI have the Artemis Fowl series in my classroom library, and you're welcome to borrow the books. I have quite a few students that love the fantasy genre, so they may just take your suggestion. I hope some of them respond to your comment.
Thank you for mentioning conflicts in literature! As much as we dislike the conflicts our characters face, it does keep the plot moving and interesting.
no this is briana smalls sorry i did not put my names i was think about something when i did this so sorry!
DeleteNo problem, Briana!
Deletei recommend miley cyrus mile to go to poeple that a fan of her it good book!
ReplyDeleteHi! Is this MaKayla?
DeleteI am just now reading a book called Ship Breaker. It is boring at first but it gets better as you go. I recommend this book.
ReplyDeleteEric Austin
Hi, Eric! So, what kept you reading the book? What type of reader would enjoy this book?
DeleteWhat kept me reading was the believe that it was going to get better. I do that with all books and they end up being good. a reader who loved slow paced action and mystery intertwined with each other would at least like this book. What type of reader are you? Would you enjoy this book?I asked the questions this time!!! ;)
DeleteEric Austin(squishy)
Wow, Eric! Thank you for the explanation.
DeleteNow, time for your question (thank you for asking). I'm like you. I usually finish a book because I simply want to see how it ends. I do love a good mystery, and I have the patience for a slower paced book. Maybe Ship Breaker should be my next read!
It should. And I also need a new read. Any suggestions anyone????
DeleteEric Austin(squishy)
I just finished The Hunger Games!
ReplyDeleteSo...would you recommend it? to what type of reader?
DeleteBe careful. We have lots of fans in our homeroom class:)

I cannot believe Katniss and Gale kissed in Catchin Fire (The Hunger Games book 2)!

Thanks, Shalese!
DeleteHey Mrs.Thomas!Ican't figure out how to put vocab words in my play!(so confused!)By the way can you play yourself in my play?
ReplyDeleteMary-Grace Buckley
Hi! Chat with me tomorrow during homeroom about your vocabulary in the play. Also, I'll absolutely be in your play. Am I portrayed in a good way, or do I need to bring my dark side to the role? Ha!
Deletei actually put you as a show host for watch you back posie!I imagined it that way!
DeleteMary-Grace Buckley
Oh, I can be a host for that posse! Ha!
DeleteWe didn't get to chat during homeroom today, so let's try again tomorrow.
Hi Mrs.Thomas! I just finished The Son of Neptune by Rick Riordan,so I don't have a book but, I ordered 2 books so they are shipping on the 13.
ReplyDeleteKyle Anderson
Great! So, what will you read during SSR tomorrow? Do you need to go to the media center in the morning?
DeleteMrs. Thomas, You know me. OshaSniv119. AKA Kyle H.
ReplyDeleteSo yeah. I've been writing wizbros. Do you like fantasy action stories?
If so you'll enjoy my book when its finished.
Hey mrs. Thomas! My mom got me warriors: Into the wild! i can finally read the book i've been dying to read! You'd understand that feeling right?
ReplyDeleteWhat a good mom! :) Yes, I do understand the feeling. I don't feel that way about every book though.
DeleteI know, but it's still a good series. By the way do you like action series? If you do you'll be pleased to proofread wizbros when its finished.
DeleteAbsolutely! I could probably do a chapter or 10 pages each week. Are you typing your draft?
DeleteI'm currently reading (and definitely enjoying) "The Mark of Athena"!The book is so awesome! I think that everybody who likes action, romance, comedy, and suspense will love these books! My favorite character is Leo Valdez. He may seem like just a third wheel, but he's extremely cool and hilarious! The only problem with the books are, that u would have had to read the Percy Jackson series and the lost hero series. I think Mrs.Thomas, u should read these books! :]
ReplyDeleteNecochan (angie)
So glad to hear you're enjoying yourself! Sometimes, we can pick up in the middle of a series because the author flashes back to events in the previous book(s). Thanks for letting us know it's best to start with the first book in this series.
DeleteI completely agree with you.
DeleteAngela Young
Hey Mrs. Thomas I'm really excited because Kari is letting me the 1st book of the chronicles or series she's reding yay
ReplyDeleteCool! Is that the same series she shared in class last Friday?
DeleteHi Mrs. Thomas I am reading Guliver's Travels while I wait on Mocking Jay. Hope it comes soon!
ReplyDelete-Ria Dunham
You're being very patient, Ria! Are you wanting to borrow my book, or did you order it?
DeleteI tried to save it for u in the library. I think my mom still has it let me check.
DeleteOh its gone sorry! Good luck!
Zy
That's so thoughtful of you, Zyare. What a good friend!
DeleteHey Mrs.Thomas!I was reading Catching Fire while my dad was in a meeting at SAA and I found uot Peeta and Katnis have to marry each other in the future and they have to look like a couple in order for Gale to stay alive
ReplyDeleteP.S. I would hate if that happened to me if i were Katniss
(sorry about spelling eerors!
Mary-Grace Buckley
I couldn't agree with you more, Mary-Grace! I wouldn't want that pressure on me. Either way, someone she loves is bound to get hurt. It somewhat reminded me of Bella's struggle in the Twilight series.
DeleteCan you tell me what your favorite book in Hunger Games series?
ReplyDeleteMary-Grace
Hi Mrs.Thomas Ok so there is one girl Cleo(Which fits her very well!) in my book Who needs luck And i want to stab her in the heart right now! she so mean for starters she broke Niall and Lucy up and I hated her even before that!Do you ever find a character that just get on your nerves?
ReplyDeleteReilly Thomas
Oh, yes! Jacob in the Twilight series annoyed me, but I grew to like him more in the 4th book. I think it really helped to hear his perspective (the author switched to 1st person narration as Jacob in that book).
DeleteReilly, your not the only one who hates Cleo.
DeleteMary-Grace Buckley
Hi, Mrs.Thomas! I would recommend The-BFG to any readers that like funny stories and mythical creatures. It also deals with Life, Love, and Learning. You should also try The-Witches. A funny tale about evil witches who, in a part, turn the boy into a mouse. Both are by Roald Dahl.
ReplyDeleteShevin S.
Hi, Shevin! I have both books on my shelf, but The Witches is in bad shape (cover is cracked). What connections are you making with our new unit (thank you for referencing it!)? Please elaborate:)
DeleteWell in the BFG book, the girl, who is at first scared of the giants, LEARNS about them better, which makes her begine to LOVE and understand them. That is how LIFE sometimes is.
DeleteWell said, Shevin! I'm so proud of you.
Deletewhen i am finished with Hunger Games series,i need a new book!Any suggestion?
ReplyDeleteI like action/adventure,romance(sometimes!),and science fiction books!
Mary-Grace Buckley
P.S.My mom is thinking about letting me have a blog account(want one SUPER bad!)
Sorry that I didn't answer. Yes it is the same the series she shared on Friday
ReplyDeleteNo problem! I placed the series on my Scholastic Book Fair wish list.
Deletehi Mrs.Thomas...

DeleteJust finished who needs luck! And let me tell you it is kinda hard to make me cry and the ending of that book I was balling and i still am!Just a good book don't read it if you don't like to cry!
ReplyDeleteReilly Thomas
If you're anything like me, you'll read the book again and cry some more.
DeleteHi Mrs.Thomas I love Hatchet so far. It's a great survivor story. This book totally deserves the Newbery Honor reward!

ReplyDeleteRichelle Clark

Hi, Rhett! What about The Hunger Games series or The Maze Runner series? Do a little online research about each series, and get your parents involved. The age group for each series is 12-17, so I like to involve parents on them.
DeleteHey Rhett, in gifted we are in groups on what type of books we like to read and Shevin is in the Si-fi group you should probably ask him if he knows some books you would like!

ReplyDeleteHey Mrs.Thomas,

So far Violet, Khlai?, and Sunny learn that thier parents have died and have to move to a mean, abusive-ish distant relitave of thiers. He makes them do hard chores and treats them unfairly. His #1 mission is to get all of their parents money. They try and try to do the right thing and take chances, but sadley it all ends in misfortune. Soon the man has a deviese plan to get the money. He's an actor, so he tells the children he's putting on a famouse play about a wedding starring him and Violet. The children know he wants the money and try to find a way to possibly stop him, but no luck. Khlia though finds an important book that can help them. This is were I stoped. I predict that the man will REALLY marry Violet and steal the money off marrage. The book kept playing it up as if it ends bad, but I don't know. This is a book where once I started, I couldn't stop. Thank You, SINCERELY SHEVIN
You're so welcome, Shevin! Thank you for letting me know, and I'm thrilled you found something you like. That's a really good feeling as a reader (and for your teacher!).
DeleteI finished the book today. Turns out Khali presents that he knows Count Olaf's plan to him so he could possibly stop the marrage. But the count traps sunny (the infant) in a 30-foot tower and plans to drop and kill her if they stop him. Soon the marage happens but they trick him and soon he's going to jail. As, though, the book says, the unhappily ends unhappily even though noone dies.
Deletesincerely,
SHEVIN
