Let's Get This Thing Started

I want to hear about your books as often as you're willing and able to share.  Yes, I know I see you five days a week, but our schedule is so full. It leaves little time to chat about the good, the bad, and everything in between when it comes to our books.

So, tell me about your book.  Do you admire a particular character, or do you find him/her to be slightly annoying?  Are you reading until 2:00 a.m. because you have to make sure things end well for your beloved character(s), or is the book a snoozefest?  You're welcome to comment on another student's post as well.  In fact, nothing would make me happier as a teacher than to see my students having real conversations about their books.  Whatever you want to share about reading on this blog, just do so with your GSS character traits (be honest, responsible, and caring).

Happy reading and blogging to us in the 2012-2013 school year!

Thank you so much for participating! Yea! You're the first official comment on our blog.

You're tackling some tough material. The stories of bravery and sacrifice from that time period never cease to amaze me. Do you think the book is well-written? Why did you decide to read it?

    2. Hi Mrs.Thomas! I just wanted to say Hi can't write much ( ipod is glitching ) But... I read _The_People_of_Sparks_ (pretend its underlined) I'm not far, but I'm glad that the main characters are with their friends again :)

    3. Jennifer,

Your "pretend it's underlined" comment made me truly laugh out loud! It was perfectly placed, and it sounded just like you:) Plus, it means you were paying attention.

Why were the main characters separated from their friends in the first place? Do you think they'll remain together for the remainder of the book?

What a way to practice your reading fluency! Our goal is to read 160 or more words per minute at the conclusion of our year. Did you alter your voice to match your interpretation of the characters?

  3. I'm been reading Sounder for the last 3 days and it is a great book. Sounder is about a poor african-american boy with a dog named sounder .The story takes place in the 19th century and the boy is struggling to basically live. One morning a delicious sweet ham is cooking in the kitchen. Finally, they have a good meal but that night a furious sheriff and his deputies come and the boy's life will never be the same.

    1. Fantastic! When I get into a book, I'm completely invested in the characters' lives. When something so unfair happens to a character, I silently plead for there to be a way to a happy ending. Do you think the sheriff is jealous? lonely? insecure? I'm wondering what's causing his fury...

Also, it was nice to meet your little sister today!

Ruby Holler is about 2 siblings that get adopted and go to this place called Ruby Holler where they live with this old couple and have amazing adventures. I'm also reading the Fire Star book. I lended CJ The Fire Within, and I always see him reading it in class free time. I sure hope he doesn't finish the series before me. It's good to see many people reading the same book series ( like the Hunger Games ) because we can all share, discuss, and have fun with it. I also saw Zoe reading Percy Jackson book 4, which reminds me I'm almost done with the series, I just didn't quite finish it ( I need to do that soon ). I also need help with underlining book titles. You have posed a very mature question about using powers for evil. I'm proud of you for it! This is a question I have asked myself many times, and I think it may come down to our choices and the motivations behind them. Unfortunately, some people choose greed, pride, and power over all else.

I think the book is great and all but, The main character goes through a lot to learn what he's supose to do for the rest ofthe series. Here's an example: Brom is a character who dies not to long after you meet him. Eragon is very sad and angry because he just lost someone who was like a father to him. That book is very sad but extremely cool and filled with lots of action. I think everyone should read these books, but I will say they are a little gory!

    1. Kyle, those books are classics, which is why we read them over and over again. I really enjoy rereading books. There are important elements we can miss the first time, and I believe the plot somehow becomes more personal during multiple readings.

  34. Hi Mrs. Thomas

I was finishing my 2 hours early and decided to recommend the series of books I'm reading. I'm reading American girl collection of Addy. the collection is about I'm not your girl and her family( sister, brother, mother and her father) and how they live ( survive) after slavery. Iwoold tell you more but you'll have to read the book to find out want happens.

I think I finished the Twilight series in about 10 days! I would read it at every opportunity. Another teacher saw me reading during school on several different occasions, and she said to me, "Mrs. Thomas, you must be going through something with those books. They haven't left your hand."

Why do you like Twilight so much?

    1. Jessica, those books are flying off my shelf (that's an idiom and a cliche)! Are you going to read the whole series? Someone told me they're like The Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, but they're targeted more towards girls. Do you think that's true?

Also, I'm very grateful to a student for donating them to our classroom library. I rely on my students to help keep me updated on the latest and greatest books.

    1. Fantastic! Thank you for the book recommendation. I haven't read the book yet, but I'm an animal lover. Is there a good chance the book will make my cry?

By the way, Anna Sophia Robb is the actress from the Bridge to Terabithia movie. I'm going to have to disagree with you on that one. In my opinion, she's too pale and blonde to play the role. Now, some makeup and a dark wig could do the trick, but I'm not sure if she has the tenacity to play Katniss.

I'm hoping someone else responds to your comment, so we can discuss this more! I love Katniss, so I'm picky:)
