New Book Needed?

It's hard to believe 1 month of school has passed!  I recommended reading 2 books each month to manage the reading expectation of 25 books this year.  How's that going?

Many of you are looking for a new book to read.  Bilal recommended The Westing Game, and Christa has since reserved a copy at the library.  Ria is racing through The Hunger Games after hearing the rest of us go on and on and on about it!  Zyare has suggested Regan join the GSS Quiz Bowl team.  Isn't that fantastic?

So, what book(s) would you recommend?  Please include a brief summary of the plot, the genre, and if possible, the Lexile score.

    1. I absolutely love these books, too! There's so much to discuss like government control, loyalty, and personal choice. Some parents and students think the book series is too violent for middle school students. What do you think?

  5. hello ms Thomas i'm reading the book Queen of Cool it is a very good book it is about a girl named Libby who is sick of having the same friends the same boyfriend and the same routine so she mistakenly sighed up for a zoo intern ship and hangs out with the "nerds" but she finds they arnt so bad and she actually is starting to like them. so if you are mature you should read this book because it has its bad language and bad moments

    1. Hi, Savannah! I haven't read this book. Thank you for the maturity warning and your discretion about the details.

As I'm sure Libby learned, our friends can be people who are different from us and don't quite fit our stereotypes of them.

    1. Hi, Allison! How cool to be reading with your dad! My mom used to get excited about the books I loved. She would take me to the library to find them, or she would give me books as birthday and Christmas presents.

I'm guessing the genre is fantasy. Is that right? Is there any comedy involved?

also finished many other books. This book called

    1. Hi, Archie! Why would Leilah be "sad" about your comment? Am I missing an inside joke? :)

What benefits are there to be reading the books when many students would opt to see the movie? Explain the value of reading the books anyway (I personally think books are almost always better than the movies about them).

      Delete
    2. I have become a blogger yahh!
First of I would say no you did not miss an insid joke. I thought that maybe she would feel bad if I Said something wrong. SO I would say that I ought to read the book instead of watching the movie because you can imagine what is happening. Or maybe you can also find out the mystery or whatever that happens instead of watching everything. Reading makes your mind refresh and makes you feel good.
SO I would say try to READ READ and READ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    3. Hi, Archie! I couldn't agree with you more. When I read books, I become a bit of a movie director. I develop ideas for the casting, the setting, etc. I do like to watch movies and experience someone else's imagination. However, I value my own imagination as well, and I use it as I read.

    4. Same Here!!!!! Well I have been trying to say this all along. I used to hate ELA
since ever since I started school. But when I came to your class, I was like Im
going like this year! I also want to appreciate for what you have done for this class!!!!!!!!!!

P.S.-- I am looking for a new book. any suggestions?

I love books full of adventures, also I love some mystery books too. By the way I love SCARY BOOKS TOO!!!!!

    5. What a wonderful way to end my evening! Thank you for the kind words. Not every day is perfect, but I do try my best at creating a friendly, engaging classroom.

How about the Percy Jackson series? It's a bit of mystery and adventure with Greek mythology.

I'm not the person to ask about horror books. I don't read them or watch scary movies. I would be up all night looking under my bed and behind the shower curtain.

  9. Hey Ms. Thomas! This is Ms. Nancy Nguyen here. I thought I should leave a comment on the blog. I'm interested in the books that everyone is reading. I've seen a popular demand for The Hunger Games and the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series.

Has anyone heard of or read the Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer? It is one of my favorite fantasy reads from middle school. Unfortunately, I haven't finished reading The Lost Colony, and I know there are 3 other books after it! =(

The main character is Artemis Fowl, a 12-year old boy genius and a criminal mastermind. He discovers the existence of magic and fairies and travels the world to find them. On his quest for gold, there are dangerous encounters with leprechauns, dwarves, and sprites. Eventually, he kidnaps one named Holly Short and holds her for ransom in exchange for fairy gold.

There is the conflict of man vs. man and good vs. evil in this book. Do you remember the other types of conflict from class? Which type of conflict is in the book you are reading?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Welcome to our blog, Ms. Nguyen! The students were asking about you today. I told them you would return on Monday.

I have the Artemis Fowl series in my classroom library, and you're welcome to borrow the books. I have quite a few students that love the fantasy genre, so they may just take your suggestion. I hope some of them respond to your comment.

Thank you for mentioning conflicts in literature! As much as we dislike the conflicts our characters face, it does keep the plot moving and interesting.

    1. Hi, Eric! So, what kept you reading the book? What type of reader would enjoy this book?

      Delete
    2. What kept me reading was the believe that it was going to get better. I do that with all books and they end up being good. a reader who loved slow paced action and mystery intertwined with each other would at least like this book. What type of reader are you? Would you enjoy this book?I asked the questions this time!!! ;)

    3. Wow, Eric! Thank you for the explanation.

Now, time for your question (thank you for asking). I'm like you. I usually finish a book because I simply want to see how it ends. I do love a good mystery, and I have the patience for a slower paced book. Maybe Ship Breaker should be my next read!

  58. If you like magical or fantasy books I think you should read this book called "Savvy". It's a really great book! Actually, if you don't already like fantasy books I believe "Savvy" will persuade you to love them! Just so you know "Savvy" is in the school media center unless someone took it.

  80. Hey Mrs.Thomas,
I've read 92 pages of book one of the unfortionate events series. So far Violet, Khlai?, and Sunny learn that thier parents have died and have to move to a mean, abusive-ish distant relitave of thiers. He makes them do hard chores and treats them unfairly. His #1 mission is to get all of their parents money. They try and try to do the right thing and take chances, but sadley it all ends in misfortune. Soon the man has a deviese plan to get the money. He's an actor, so he tells the children he's putting on a famouse play about a wedding starring him and Violet. The children know he wants the money and try to find a way to possibly stop him, but no luck. Khlia though finds an important book that can help them. This is were I stoped. I predict that the man will REALLY marry Violet and steal the money off marrage. The book kept playing it up as if it ends bad, but I don't know. This is a book where once I started, I couldn't stop. Thank You, SINCERELY SHEVIN

    2. I finished the book today. Turns out Khali presents that he knows Count Olaf's plan to him so he could possibly stop the marrage. But the count traps sunny (the infant) in a 30-foot tower and plans to drop and kill her if they stop him. Soon the marage happens but they trick him and soon he's going to jail. As, though, the book says, the unhappily ends unhappily even though noone dies.
      sincerely,
      SHEVIN
